Organising a professional fireworks display

How much do fireworks cost?

The cost of a professional firework display can vary enormously depending on the intensity, size and number of fireworks fired and the duration of the display.

A high quality wedding firework display would normally cost about £795 for 6-8 minutes duration and typically £100 for every extra minute after that.  Once the budget exceeds £1,500 then you could consider the option of having your display choreographed to music.

As a guide an organisation such as a Round Table or Parish Council typically spends between £3,000 to £6,000 for a 15  minute pyromusical.

Major Guy Fawkes displays as seen in many cities across the UK over November would typically cost between £10,000 and £16,000 and often have audiences in excess of 20,000.

Larger displays seen in such places as Battersea Park, Edinburgh Castle and the London Eye can range from between £30,000 to £200,000.

The record for the most expensive firework display is held by Kuwait for the 50th anniversary of the ratification of Kuwait’s Constitution in November 2012.  The display cost a reported £10,000,000 !

The Guinness World Record for the largest firework display was achieved by The Church of Christ in Manilla in the Philippines at the countdown to the 2016 New Year Celebrations.  Although the cost of the display is unreported.

How long should a fireworks display last?

The duration and budget for your display are intrinsically linked.  In our opinion longer does not always mean better.

A wedding firework display would normally last between 6 and 15 minutes.

For a public or corporate display we would recommend the display duration to be between 18 and 22 minutes. This duration is proven to keep the attention of the audience throughout the entire display by delivering a high impact, non stop barrage of colour and sound.

Most of the worlds largest firework displays such as London’s New Year Celebrations only last 11-12 minutes!

How much space do I need?

In all cases we will undertake a site survey and agree with the client the layout of the site and the safety distances.

It is the client’s responsibility to ensure that the safety distances are guarded and maintained.

Do I need a licence or special permission?

No.  There are no restrictions other than any that are imposed by your venue. You must however have permission from the landowner.

You do not normally need to notify the Police or Local Authorities for a smaller firework display but we think it is a good idea to let them and your neighbours know in advance to avoid any unexpected disturbance.

For public displays we would suggest you contact your local authority and they will advise you.

General Firework Display Questions

What type of fireworks do you use?

We only use category 4 fireworks for our displays.  These types of fireworks are not available to the general public but only professional firework companies.

The fireworks are much larger, louder and brighter than those which are bought in the shops.

When designing a show we use many different type of firework including aerial shells, barrages (cakes), roman candles, gerbs (fountains), bundles, combinations, single shot and mines.

Can we have music with the fireworks?

We are British Musical Firework Champions and specialists in choreographing fireworks to music!

We believe the combination of music and fireworks adds so much more to a display and makes for a more spectacular occasion.

Take a look at our Fireworks to Music page for more information!

What music should I choose?

We can choreograph fireworks to any piece of music, but some styles of music work better than others.

We suggest you start with a theme or favourite song in mind.

We always approach the selection of music in partnership with our clients.

This helps to ensure that the creative process is collaborative and that the final selection is agreeable to all parties.

What if its raining?

We work hard to ensure all of our fireworks are waterproofed and protected from the weather and we won’t cancel a firework display due to rain unless there is flooding or a risk to people.

We get wet not our fireworks!

What if it's windy?

Safety is our number one priority and unfortunately the wind is our number one enemy, however cancellation of a display is extremely rare..

In windy conditions we may choose with agreement with the event organiser to fire a test shell and follow the track of the fallout..

We will do whatever we can to ensure a safe and successful display and may work with the organiser to move the spectator area or firing site.

We may choose to exclude long burning effects from the display or cancel the display completely.

If we cancel a display we will always work with the display organiser to re-arrange the time or date if possible.

Can we have fireworks all year round?

Yes.  However, consideration should be given to daylight hours and when it will be dark enough to get the full impact of the fireworks.

By law a firework cannot be fired after 11.00pm unless the date of the display has dispensation such as November 5th, New Years Eve, Chinese New Year or Diwali.

Do you leave the area tidy?

Yes! We always clear up as much of the firework debris as possible following the display, leaving the site as far as is possible, just as we found it.

Safety

How much space do I need?

In all cases we will undertake a site survey and agree with the client the layout of the site and the safety distances.

It is the client’s responsibility to ensure that the safety distances are guarded and maintained.

What about a Risk Assessment?

A site survey will be undertaken by us and a site specific risk assessment carried out.

We work closely with our clients and are available to attend planning meetings, site surveys and work with Safety Advisory Groups as required.

We will supply a copy of the site specific risk assessment in good time ahead of the firework display.

My venue will not allow fireworks?

If your venue has a restriction on the use of fireworks this is probably due to noise.  Illusion Fireworks can provide stunning, low noise displays and would be happy to speak to your venue on your behalf to see what we can do.

Can our display have a theme?

Yes.  We can select different colours, effects and accompanying music to fit any theme.

Take a look at our Wedding Fireworks page for more information!

Can we have low noise fireworks?

Using specialist materials we can provide a reduced noise, high-impact display at venues where noise levels are a consideration.

Choose from any one of our packages and we will replace the loud effects with visually stunning quieter ones.
